Old Stuff I Like

Page for fountain pens, and banker boxes, and random old stuff I have.

Victorian Lap Desk circa 1890

I have my mom’s vintage fountain pens from the 1950s and 1960s. They needed a proper home. I went to an indoor flea market that is, at best, a place to sell all the things that “fell off the back of a truck”, and at worst, a collection of yard sale rejects stalls. But among all the crap and knock offs, I found this lap desk.

I’ve seen these before, at nice antique shops. Asking price was always $75-$150. Conditions were always, “meh”. This one though? Good condition. Hinges were all there and working. Felt in tact. Ink bottle inside. Original key still with it. $20. Sold and sold.

It’s a great place to hold my mom’s pens, and silver mechanical pencils (those Brits were just so extra).

Now I keep thank you notes and wax sealer in it as well. A great addition to my desk.

A little info on lap desks

A quick check on eBay is heartening: there’s plenty of travel/lap writing desks on there like this one (in various conditions) for under $50. Go forth and get your Victorian writing on!

Antique Document Box

Honestly, no idea

I found this at my local antique/collectible/junk shop. It has that old lacquer worn off on it. And very very worn images of old steam engines. I’ve seen similar ones that are made to sit on top of a desk/table. It’s big. Like, double the size of my old lap desk big. It’s a perfect fit on top of my HP printer/scanner. A good 10″ x 12″ I’d say. Anyway, it holds my comics and random fandom stuff.
